5 Tips for Making a Great Salad

I am a big fan of salads but I tend not to eat them enough!  With that being said, I am here enlisting some of my favorite tips for making a great salad.  Some people say that a great salad is all in the dressing – well I am not sure I buy that statement.

I am a big advocate that fresh ingredients will deliver top notch results.  Salads are meant to be simple, yet flavorful and can be created without any stress or time constraints.

Salad Tips

1.  Add Dark Greens to the Mix.

Romaine, arugula or spinach will add a whole host of vitamins and nutrients to your salad, including vitamin A, vitamin C and folate.

2.  Watch the Dressing.

Control exactly how much dressing goes into your salad by referring to the serving suggestion on the label. It’s also a good idea to keep the dressing on the side so you can add a little at a time without overdoing it.

3.  Include Fruit in Green Salads.

Fruit like orange sections, cubed mango or dried, unsweetened cranberries will add not only more flavor and color but also vitamins and antioxidants.

4.  Pack in the Protein.

When eating a salad as your main meal, make sure it provides at least 10 to 15 grams of protein per serving. To meet this requirement, add 3/4 cup of chickpeas or
lentils, two hard boiled eggs or 1/4 cup of nuts.

5.  Dress Simple and Late.

Salad dressings do not have to be anything complex.  A simple dash of olive oil, vinegar and some grainy mustard makes for a great dressing.  Another tip I noted from Michael Smith is to dress the salad just before serving.  He often puts the dressing in the bottom of the bowl and tosses once you are ready to eat.

I love salads! Though I tend to just throw whatever in there and not measure out anything. It’s basically whatever I have in the fridge haha.

great salad tips! i agree with everything you said. sometimes salads are best with no dressing, and sometimes, that’s what makes it. it just depends.

I am all about salads when the weather is hot- the local farmers markets have buckets of greens for a dollar. Can’t go wrong with those!

Good tips for everyone….I often just dress my salad with a splash of good vinegar, a twist of fresh lime juice and some cracked sea salt and black pepper. The flavors shine with such simplicity, and of course I am loading them with about half a dozen different veggies, dried fruits and nuts. Yum….I may have to have a salad for breakfast!

I’m so glad you mentioned adding mustard to the dressing! I always ask for mustard when I order salads at restaurants but everyone looks at me weird. I also like to add salsa as a dressing. It’s fat free and so much lower in calories than most dressings! For added protein, I also like to top my salads with cottage cheese or Greek yogurt. I know the yogurt sounds strange but imagine adding sour cream to salads, which I know a lot of people do.

I like how you mention salads should be simple. I find my favourite salads usually have 5 ingredients or less. No need to pile on your whole fridge!! :P

I love Michael Smith!! That dressing on the bottom of the bowl is a good one. I bet it could work for packed salads that I bring to work :) Thank for the tips!

Great tips!! I find that using salsa as dressing always spices it up or if I use enough fruit, I don’t even need dressing :)

When adding dressing to a large salad that will be shared with many, I use a tip that I learned from Anne Burrell on the Food Network – drizzle the dressing around the edge of the salad bowl. Allow the dressing to run down the sides and then toss salad with your hands or tongs to ensure that all the leaves get coated. The key is to use minimal dressing so that the leaves and fixings aren’t drowned.

I agree – sometimes the simpler the salad dressing, the better! I think my favorite salad dressing is just olive oil and balsamic vinegar. And I love adding avocado to a salad and just using the avocado as a salad dressing since it has such a creamy texture!

I love adding different fruits to salads! Adds a nice touch of sweetness!

For protein, I like to add cheese, and other times I’ll add tuna fish!

I vote against the simple salad. For most people that buying a 99 cent bag of lettuce with a bit of carrot and cabbage, and putting dressing on it. For the busy dinner provider, they should slow down and take some time over a salad, adding as many different vegetables as possible, as long as the flavors match,, and perhaps some boiled egg rings or cheese cubes. Try two kinds of cheese. Try avacado, pepper, garbanzo or kidney beans. Think outside the box. It’s not only healthier, it tastes tons better. We stopped eating salads for a long time, because we were only eating the store bag version…
