Apples: A Day in the Orchard

by zesty on October 13, 2008 · 36 comments

Saturday past was slated as family day in the orchard! We had a blast. The weather was really nice, sun shining, birds chirping and apples a plenty. I don’t often attend the apple orchard events but I must say that I was impressed. The focus at this particular orchard were Cortland and McIntosh Apples. It was somewhat crowded in the parking aisles but the orchard was so big – it felt like you were picking by yourselves.  The following days will likely contain many more apple baked goodness and I may even try the apple crisp version from a while ago.

A quick shot in the orchard…

Just getting a closer look at all the apples in the tree… Can you tell that I don’t come to the orchard very often?

Checking out the Cortland up close…

The finished product… Not too mention we had 47 lb. in total we just threw some in a basket to make the picture look good!

When we got home from the orchard I wanted to whip up a quick snack for everyone and test out these apples (even though I knew they were tasty because i inhaled two at the orchard). I came up with some of my favorite ways to eat an apple besides the old fashion way of washing it off and chomping in.

Below are three quick ways to prepare apples that are usually fan favorites with the younger crowd:

1. Apple Peanut Butter

2. Apple Brown Sugar

3. Apple Chocolate

Thank you so much for reading about my apple orchard day.  Now because I am super curious about almost everything.  I want to know what everyone loves on their apples?

Happy Thanksgiving to all fellow Canadians!!  Enjoy the turkey!

Looks like so much fun! Those apples are beautiful! McIntosh apples are my favorite. I love them sprinkled with cinnamon sugar!

Love this post! I love caramel dip as a treat with my apples! I also love butter rum sauce over my apple dumplings (which my brother makes! YUMMY!)

Thanks for the kind feedback guys!

HoneyB, do you care to share the recipe for the butter rum sauce?

Aww, your pictures are great! We hit an orchard yesterday, too :D

For favorites, I’m definitely an apple pie girl. Though I do love a little bowl of cut up apples sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.

Great post!

I love dipping my apples in warm caramel sauce…mmm! If I have a sharp apple, I’ll grab some cheddar cheese.

mmmm apples! There is nothing like fall apples! Calgary doesn’t have any near enough to pick, but fall apples are so good!

I’ve never been to an apple orchard before and it looks so much fun! I love apples but I have not heard of Courtland and McIntosh apples. Only Gala and Fuji are more commonly imported here. I would absolutely love to try all the different types of apples. Oh, I’d prefer my apples au naturel.

The apples look lovely. It’s much more fun to pick them yourself! My sister used to melt chocolate chips and dip apple slices in it – so tasty!

That orchard would be equal to heaven to my mum! She’s a real apple-indugled person.

I never eat fresh apple with a garnishing, but I love it in crumbles(crisps) and with fruit tisanes. A

When I need something sweet&healthy I chop apples, combine them with cinnamon, a very little amount of brown sugar, raisins, orange slices and a splash of Syrah and cook in a pan, then serve in cups. Mmmmm yummy…

Ahh, such stunning photographs of the apples!!

I eat apples plain & raw; and sliced :-)

I love apple picking! We actually tried to go this weekend but there weren’t any U-pick places open. So we went strawberry picking instead.

I think my favorite apple combo is apples and almond butter. Or apple crisp. That’s more like apples+oats+brown sugar+butter though :)

Looks wonderful! I love trips to the orchard with a basket full of fresh picked apples to follow! One of my favorites on an apple is peanut butter… a quick pick me up. Another that I love right now is caramel. Caramel Apples… YUM!

cinnamon and splenda – so good! Like eating the inside of an apple pie!

I slice my apples, put cinnamon and 1 packet of Spenda and just shake until they are all coated.

I love going to apple orchards in the fall. It’s nice to be able to “work the land” at least once a year.

I love apples and the fall. I came up with an Apple Poached Fish recipe one year that is my families favorite. -chef E

I love, love, love cheddar cheese with my apples. The sharper the better. Your trip to the orchard looks like it was a lot of fun. I can’t believe that you came home with that many apples!

Thanks for the Stumble today….I had a lot of new visitors thanks to you! :-)

Hey Cory, you read my mind… I plan to take the girlfriend apple picking next weekend. Favorite apple treat? Slice the apple into about 12 slices, arrange on a plate and completely douse in cinnamon. I wish I could include a picture here because I have a sweet one of it. Make sure the apple is super crisp and really cold. Thumbs up for this one!

I loved my apple picking weekend too! It was so much fun. I personally love apples cooked with pork.

21 Lisa October 13, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Love those fresh apples. I like mine dipped in caramel (the kind you squuze on ice cream). I think I will go have some now!

22 Sara October 14, 2008 at 12:14 am

I love apples with chunky peanut butter, but just recently I’ve fallen in love with apples and pumpkin butter! Yummy. :)

23 zestycook October 14, 2008 at 9:48 am

Thanks for the feedback – it is pretty much a given that most people love cinnamon or caramel on their apples as well as the above simple treats. Stay tuned tomorrow for a simple caramel apple that will make you HAPPY!

I liked the one with the chocolate and the apple. Since I was just introduced to Nutella about a month ago, I have been using that (sparingly!) with apples. It is so good. I bet nutella and peanut butter together would be just as good!

Nice pictures!

25 Catms916 October 14, 2008 at 6:24 pm

I loooove apples dipped in plain yogurt or plain yogurt swirled with honey!!

26 Reeni October 14, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Apple picking is so much fun. I love apples diced up in my salad, adds a little zest to it!

27 Lori October 15, 2008 at 9:20 am

Oh, I miss apple picking! Thanks for sharing your pictures. It reminded me of good times. :) I love mine with peanut butter or cinnamon.

28 Happy Herbivore October 15, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Yuor orchard photos are so beautiful. I miss living in New England and going apple-pickin

29 meg wolff October 15, 2008 at 9:40 pm

I like mine fresh and plain, but once in a while a sprinkle of cinnamon. Loved your apple orchard photos, especially the trees and the basket at the end. I’m guessing you are somewhere in New England because of the McIntosh?

30 ZestyCook October 15, 2008 at 9:43 pm

Jennifer – Yeah I agree PB and nutella would be good.

CatMS – I would love that too!

Reeni – I have to say I love chicken salad with apples and raisins with some walnuts on top

Thanks Lori and Happy Herbivore

Meg – Actually I am in PEI Canada. Thanks for the nice comment!

31 meg wolff October 15, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Wow, you are from PEI. I once saw a group called Barachois from PEI. They were so wonderful. My ancestors hailed from Tracadie (hope I have that spelled right), NS.

32 Cate October 18, 2008 at 8:53 am
