They're Back….Chocolate Cream Cheese Cupcakes

by zesty on June 11, 2010 · 61 comments

Guess what’s back!!  You guessed it.  Another round of chocolate cream cheese cupcakes.  You cannot go too many months without baking these again if you can even survive that long.  It is a sun-filled day today so I thought I would share with you a baking recap from a few nights ago.  I made these last year at the Cooking in laws in the summer and they are always a huge hit.

Can you really beat chocolate, cream cheese and to top it all off in bite size cupcake form?

So before we begin with the amazing recipe and picture overload

Cream Cheese Topping

  • 8 Oz. Cream Cheese
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/3 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 Tsp. Salt
  • 1 Cup Chocolate Chips

Dry Batter

  • 1 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 1 Cup White Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Cocoa
  • 1 Tsp. Baking Soda
  • 1/2 Tsp. Salt

Liquid Items

  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1/3 Cup Canola Oil
  • 1 Tsp. White Vinegar
  • 1 Tsp. Vanilla

  1. Preheat oven to 350 Degrees and spray muffin tins with cooking spray.
  2. Stir the cream  cheese to a creamy, smooth consistency.  Add egg, sugar and salt and stir  (blend) (cream) to uniform smooth consistency.

  3. Stir in the chocolate chips.

  4. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl,  form a “well ” and set aside.

  5. Combine liquid ingredients  in another  bowl.

  6. Stir liquid ingredients into dry ingredients.  Be sure not to over mix.

  7. Spoon chocolate mixture into muffin tins until about 2/3 full.

  8. Top each muffin with a tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture (Do note the spoon technique).

  9. Bake small muffin tins for  9 -11 minutes and regular muffin tins for 20-25 minutes.

  10. Remove from oven and let cool.

  11. ENJOY!

Zesty Tip: If you need to take these special treats with you to a party, you can make 1.5 times the batter portion. You will have lots of cream cheese topping.  Also note that these cupcakes freeze well and are good warm or cold.

So now after all this, I have to hear what you think about these cupcakes.  When you pop one in your mouth you automatically step away from reality and fall in love with the texture and flavor.  Lately I have been hooked on home juice with chocolate treats.  I know it sounds crazy – but I have been trying out different juicer recipes for the last couple of weeks and I think I am addicted.  Usually I am a milk and chocolate guy all the way.

Have a great Friday and be on the lookout for another great treat from our baking excursion the other night.

Take care

14 Megan

Oh yum! These remind me of black-bottom cupcakes. I think those use a vanilla batter rather than chocolate though. Trying to think of an excuse to make these right now!

Oh and I wanted to ask if you have any experience with joomla? I’m wanting to get a new site going. I have the site, the joomla template and new logo. I’m just getting so frustrated because I know what I’d like to do, but I have no idea. Any good joomla tutorials/books out there? thanks!

21 CAW

Do you use an amateur or a professional hand model??

22 ZestyCook

@CAW – we use a professional hand model.

23 ttfn300

love the kitchen!!! muffins look tasty too :)

24 Sarah (LovIN My Tummy)

These were a staple in my house growing up! Only my mom called them “self filled” cupcakes, and she’d spoon half the batter in the muffin well, add a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture, then top with the chocolate batter again. Lo and behold: a self-filled cupcake!

I like to see what I’m eating too, though, and your cupcakes look delish!

25 HoneyB

Zesty – great looking cupcakes! Your sis has an awesome kitchen!

26 Terri

30 Kate

these look AMAZING, perfect to make for my boss’ bday! how many does this recipe make?? (in a regular muffin tin)

31 Tine

Wow, these are really great! I made them last week for the first time and me (and my family and friends) really love it. I’ll make another portion today!
Thanks for sharing the recipe!

32 Vicki

Trying the Chocolate Cream Cheese Cupcakes this afternoon. I was wondering how many regular size cupcakes it makes … the picture shows 2 dozen. Thanks!

33 Vicki

For those of you wondering, it makes a dozen regular-sized cupcakes, and they are YUMMY!!!

34 ZestyCook

Thanks Vicki for the information.

35 Ms.Messmaker

These are a 20-year favorite for me. We too called them Black Bottom Cupcakes. I add 1/2 cup of Skor or Heath caramel chips to the cream cheese mixture. Absolute heaven. You’re a better person than me for sharing this recipe…it’s been my favorite *secret* recipe forever. :)

36 Timothy

I am home for Christmas break. I wanted to bake so I made these cupcakes for my family following your recipe. Fortunately, I set aside a few for myself. My brothers and sister ate the rest of them up very quickly!

37 Timothy

I forgot to mention that I doubled it so that there would be enough for everyone in my family.

38 Adeline

Best muffcakes ever !
I discovered this recipe through a friend. It’s one of the best thing I’ve ever eaten !

39 Scrumptious

The cupcakes look delicious! What type of icing would you suggest topping them off with?

40 zesty

Maybe stick with a cream cheese icing to compliment the filling

41 Ashley

These are better known as black bottom cupcakes and they are delicious!

42 Bulut

I just made these and they turned out awesome! I used whole wheat flour instead of regular and buttermilk substitute instead of water (so it wouldnt be too dense cause of whole wheat) and i reckon there wasn’t much of a change in taste compared to yours. Cream cheese topping is also great. Thanks for the recipe!

43 zesty

Bulut, So glad they turned out. I like the slight alteration you made as well.

44 Amy

I’ve only made these once, but I’ll definitely be making more! These are the best cupcakes I’ve ever had

45 zesty

Thanks Amy, I am glad you like them

46 jerwin palo

thank you verry much

47 Veronica

Hello Cooking,

I wanted to try out muffin recipe (for the first time) and came across your cream cheese chocolate ones that look delish :)
Have few questions if you dont mind
1. what size cup did you use (maximum capacity in grams , ml or oz ) ?
Or if you could tell me how many gram/oz is ” 1 Cup White Sugar” i will recalculate the rest.
2. This might sound stupid but how can i make muffins with big top ? I love the tops and naturaly want them to be as big as possible :)
3. do you have any recipe for a yummy muffins with caramel filling ?

Thanks you in advance

48 zesty

Hi Veronica, usually 8 oz to a cup… usually for big muffin tops you need a fairly dense batter and you need to the fill the muffin tin almost to the top. The risk you run here is that the muffins will run together and then you will have to cut them apart before removing. Not the end of the world but just something to note. As for muffins with a caramel filling… i have nothing that I tried but you could probably follow the brownies to die for method and incorporate the caramel filling into your batter.

49 fbuchanan

Super easy to make! And omg so good!!!! Thanks for sharing this recipe!! It’s going in the keeper pile.

50 fbuchanan

I actually turned these into cookie monster cupcakes with cream cheese icing on top. I was worried it would be too much with the cream cheese filling but they tasted AMAZING!!!!

51 zesty

That sounds awesome!! Did you take any pictures?

52 Salina

my 2nd tray is in the oven now. 1st tray cooling off on the rack. Can’t wait to taste them! I had extra cream cheese filling though *LOL* i had a 250gm pack cream cheese. Didn’t want to follow exactly per the recipe of 8oz coz I’d have a bit leftover. I’ll just turn them into a lone cream cheese muffin ;)

53 zesty

Hi Salina! I hope you enjoyed them! I love the combination of the cream cheese and chocolate :)

54 theultimatefoodaddict

the cupcakes look perfect and they seem so easy to make! will try this! thanks for sharing!

55 zesty

THank you! Yep, these cupcakes are a piece of cake! Literally :)
